For aspiring breeders of the herb, far and away the most crucial and exciting work is to create IBLs from landraces.
Within just two to three generations of selection, the results of working one landrace are absolutely transformative: across-the-board enhancement of resin output, aroma, yield, potency and any other trait that you’re selecting for.
This most fundamental point really hasn’t hit home yet for many aficionados with an interest in landraces.
Or to put it another way, almost nobody is doing the work that needs to be done with any of these varieties.
The serious breeding work is creating IBLs.
The image shows the Idukki variety which we collected in Kerala. Just two generations of selection have radically boosted its typical potency from seed, bringing it up to a level where plants frequently show THC like that of even the strongest modern hybrids.
After all, these tropical landrace varieties are the populations from which were created modern varieties like Haze.
Simply allow all healthy males to very lightly pollinate your females, then use the seeds from best females next season. That’s how Mel Frank created his Afghani No. 1 and his Durban Poison. That’s the essential process at the heart of the creation of all ganja landraces. That’s all it takes!
