A cannabis landrace from a crucial centre of production of ‘Thai’ ganja, the jungles and highlands of Bolikhamsai, Lao PDR.
Ganja is a traditional household plant in this region of Laos, particularly among ethnic Tai rice-farming lowland communities such as the Lao.
The historical ganja cultivations along the Mekong River expanded with Western demand for Thai Stick in the late 1960s, especially around centres such as Vientiane and Nakhon Phanom. Inside Laos, cultivation around towns such as Thakaek grew rapidly through the 1980s after US-driven crackdowns across the Mekong in the ethnically Lao region of nearby northern Isan (NE Thailand).
Most of this cultivation has now moved into the highlands of Bolikhamsai, with the best quality ganja raised using irrigation for the flowering stage, timed during the dry weather from December to March.
Across the tropics ganja is cultivated as a five- to six-month crop – from seed to harvest.
Expect rich intense aromas and highs that bring a positivity most tokers in the West have forgotten exists. Effects are strongly euphoric and range from intensely stimulating to trippy and psychedelic.
Tai landraces – i.e., Lao, Thai, and Shan ganja domesticates – remain some of the best cannabis landraces and are a goldmine for serious cultivators and breeders.
The photo shows our Highland Lao #4 accession from Bolkihamsai outdoors in mid-July at 40° N.
